A common problem with older computers is that the CMOS battery on the motherboard has to be replaced because it has run down. Older computers such as GX-240s and GX260s are most likely to need new batteries, but it can happen on any computer. If you see a 'low voltage' error message on a newer Optiplex machine, such as a GX280, chances are that there is a problem with the system. Replace the CR-2032 battery when any of the following conditions takes place.
Boot messages that indicate a bad battery
- Alert! System battery voltage is low
- Press F1 to continue. F2 for setup utility

- Computer can't keep accurate time, especially if the calendar keeps on resetting to a much earlier date.
- Computer doesn't do Windows Updates
- A computer with Deep Freeze goes into Maintenance mode during the day.
How to Replace the CMOS Battery
All Dell OptiPlex computers use the 3.0 volt CR-2032 battery. Buy these batteries at most drugstores and electronics retailers. They cost $3.00 to $5.00 each, depending on quantity and where you buy the battery. No special brand of battery is required. Check the expiration date on the packaging.
The CMOS battery is a coin-sized silvery disc that is located near the front of the motherboard. Carefully remove the battery by prying it out of its socket with your fingers or with a blunt, nonconductive object, such as a plastic screwdriver. Then install the new battery:
- Orient the battery with the side labeled "+" facing up.
- Insert the battery into the socket, and snap it into place.
After you replace the battery, boot the computer and enter the BIOS configuration setup (F2 at startup). Check the date and time, and other configuration items.
